Is my meter Automatic or Manual?

Buildings are typically equipped with meters providing the information you need to track your electricity and water consumption data. But, meters may require manual readings at certain times, depending on your connection setup and supplier.

Manual meters

If your meter is manual, you (or your company) must read and report the meter values yourself.
  • Enter your readings on your supplier’s customer portal (for example, on Veitur’s “My Pages”).

  • Once the supplier updates their records, Klappir automatically retrieves the data.

  • Do not send readings directly to Klappir – readings are only recognized after your supplier confirms them.

Regular manual readings (for example, once per month) help maintain accurate energy and emission reporting in Klappir.

Automatic meters

An automatic meter (also known as a smart meter) is connected directly to your utility provider and transmits usage data automatically.

  • Data is imported to Klappir through your supplier’s system.

  • Readings usually update at regular intervals (monthly/quarterly/yearly), depending on your provider.

  • If your meter is automatic, data coverage is typically consistent and reliable.

However, automatic does not always mean continuous real-time updates.

Immediate data streaming

Some newer meters are equipped with immediate data streaming capabilities.

  • These send real-time or near real-time readings directly to the supplier and into Klappir.

  • This provides continuous updates and allows for detailed analysis of consumption trends and anomalies.

  • Streaming meters are most common in modern electricity and district heating systems, especially in larger buildings or industrial facilities.

Troubleshooting and missing data

Even automatic meters can experience data gaps or variations:

  • Missing data: Check your supplier’s records, invoices, or online account to confirm the latest readings.

  • Sudden drop in meter readings: This can happen during a meter replacement or when transitioning from a manual to an automatic meter. Temporary differences in data are normal during this process.

How to check in Klappir

For Manual uploads:

  1. Go to the Data>Previous imports in the Klappir Platform.

  2. Locate the relevant completed imports (Electricity, District heating, or Cold/Hot water).

  3. Check the your data entries are consistent and accurate with your consumption

If you have a data connection: your data is either coming in to the platform from automatic meters or Immediate Data Streaming and will appear in Organisation>map data. To review the data coming in automatically, head to Insights to check that the data flowing is accurate.

What’s Common in Iceland

In Iceland, most electricity meters are automatic, but some older properties may still rely on manual readings.
Automatic readings are generally accurate, but they may update intermittently based on supplier collection schedules, such as Veitur’s mobile sensor readings.

Tip

Keeping your meter data updated – whether manualautomatic, or streaming – ensures that your energy use, emissions, and cost data in Klappir remain accurate, traceable, and ready for sustainability reporting and impact analysis.
