5.4 Write Your Disclosure Narratives

Draft and finalise the text that will appear in your Sustainability Report

Why This Matters

Each data point under the ESRS or VSME framework requires a clear, structured explanation — not just numbers. This step ensures that your Sustainability Statement contains all the necessary narrative disclosures.

Where to Write Your Narrative

Each data point in the Reporting module has a Response field. This is where you write your disclosure — what will appear in your final report.
You can access it by:

  1. Opening the Reporting module

  2. Selecting a chapter (e.g. Strategy, Policies, Actions)

  3. Scrolling to the relevant data point

Write directly into the Response box.

You can upload evidence (optional) to support your disclosure.

What to Include in the Narrative

Your text should:

  • Directly address the specific requirement or question

  • Reflect your organisation’s actual practices

  • Refer to relevant policies, actions, or targets

  • Be honest about limitations (e.g., "We are in the process of...")

  • Use clear and concise language

  • Avoid overly technical jargon (unless appropriate)

Example – Strategy Narrative (S1 Own Workforce)

Requirement: Describe material risks and opportunities related to your own workforce.

Narrative Example:

Our organisation recognises that increased stress and turnover among staff represent material risks. We are addressing these through flexible working policies, training programs, and health initiatives. These actions support retention and align with our well-being targets (see S1 Target Group). We continue to monitor turnover trends and staff survey results to evaluate effectiveness.

Tips for Success

  • Use the Materiality Assessment and Action Module to pull in real examples of what you’re doing.

  • Refer to linked targets (if applicable) to demonstrate alignment.

  • Use consistent terminology across all chapters.

  • Save early, and update regularly as you get new input or evidence.

Once your disclosures are written and marked “Ready to Report,” they can be exported as a Sustainability Statement.

Generate Your Sustainability Report

Once your disclosure narratives are complete and your data points are marked as “Ready to Report,” you can generate a formal report from within the Reporting module.

  1. Go to the Reporting module

  2. At the top, select your reporting framework, e.g.
    VSME Basic & Comprehensive Module

  3. Under Select a report, choose:
    Sustainability Reporting

This will compile your full Sustainability Statement, including all completed narrative responses and linked data points.

Export options include PDF, Word, or Excel.

📌 Tip: You can also generate a Gap Analysis report if you're still working on completion.
